On Feb 3, ADM was named a winner of the 2021 edie Sustainability Leaders Award in the Supply Chain Excellence category for its work to ethically source vanilla and support smallholder farmers in Madagascar.
Now in its 14th year, the edie Sustainability Leaders Awards is the UK’s largest sustainability awards scheme and is well recognized across Europe. The awards celebrate the people, projects and initiatives that help accelerate transformation and achieve excellence across the spectrum of green business.
ADM was recognized for the impact of SAVAN, a joint venture with Sahanala, a farmer-owned cooperative with over 4,000 vanilla farmers in Madagascar. More than 70% of the world’s vanilla is sourced from the island country.
“ADM’s sustainability journey in vanilla started with a genuine desire for a fair handshake with farmers. Our joint venture SAVAN has helped enable the first ever farmer-owned vanilla supply chain in Madagascar, all the way from growing the vanilla beans to curing and exporting them. Also being a pioneer in digital traceability for vanilla back to the farm, SAVAN balances the long-term socio-economic needs of vanilla farmers with the desire of ADM’s food & beverage customers to get access to responsibly sourced vanilla,” said Mukul Juneja, ADM’s vice president, Vanilla Commercial Development.
