Vanilla extract is a common staple in almost every recipe. About 1,400 tons of dried vanilla is produced worldwide each year! The most interesting concept, is that people really don’t know how healthy vanilla actually is.

When vanilla first left Mexico in the early 1500s on ships bound for Spain, it’s initial value was only thought to be perfume. It wasn’t until Cortes arrived in 1519, that the Spaniards learned it was also an excellent flavor.

We’ve recently read a well written, and informative article by Sirah Dubois about vanilla. We’ve summarized some of our favorite and most interesting points.

As we mentioned previously, vanilla extract is one of the most commonly used ingredients in cooking and baking. It is almost like a “lower calorie sweetener.” While it’s true, vanilla extract isn’t extremely sweet by itself, its unique flavor, paired with its strong aroma creates the perfect flavor profile to compliment almost any recipe.

Next, vanilla has been found to be a great source of vitamins and minerals. A pure and natural vanilla extract, such as our Organic Vanilla Extract and Pure Vanilla Extract can contain many B vitamins (B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5, B-6) that are beneficial to the body’s metabolism and energy production. Our vanilla extract has one of the highest vanillin levels on the market, making it one of the purest forms available.

Vanilla extract is also a great way to cut the acidity out of your food. In fact, just a few drops of vanilla will help to smooth out the flavor and harshness of acidic foods making them settle better in your body.

Lastly, one of the most interesting theories about vanilla is that it can be an antidepressant, sleep aid, and even an aphrodisiac! It has been used for hundreds of years to cure sleeping issues, relax and calm a person, and also positively enhance their mood. Both the taste and scent of vanilla can provoke these feelings. That’s one of the reasons the most widely made scented candle is vanilla!
